Select Area
Area Selection defines the geographic boundary of your course. It determines the satellite image and terrain data that your Canvas is built on.
Finding your course location:
A dialog prompts you to locate your course. You can:
- Search by city, address, or place name
- Click Use my current location
- Close the dialog and browse the map manually
Selecting the area:
A selection frame is shown in the center of the map. Pan and zoom the map until the course area fits inside the frame. A few tips:
- Keep the area as tight as possible — a smaller selection gives better satellite detail
- The area dimensions are shown at the bottom of the frame (e.g. "500m x 334m")
- The Satellite detail indicator shows the image quality for your selection — green is best, orange means the area may be too large for sharp detail
- If the area is too small or too large, a warning appears at the top of the frame
- You can adjust the area later if needed
When the frame covers your course, click Select area.
Parkdly then downloads the satellite image and imports terrain elements (forests, roads, pathways, buildings) from OpenStreetMap. These form your Canvas Background for all design work. This may take a moment depending on the size of your area and connection speed.
Tip: Background elements can always be edited directly in Parkdly. But if terrain data is missing or outdated at the source, you can update it on OpenStreetMap and then reselect the area in Parkdly to get the updated data. Parkdly uses a weekly snapshot of OpenStreetMap, so wait about a week after editing before reselecting — until the next snapshot is cut, reselecting will show the same data. This helps both your course design and the OpenStreetMap community.
